Peach Blossom Farm Story

The story of the land traces back to 1829, the earliest recorded date tied to the property, though its roots reach long before records were kept. In its earliest known chapter, the farm was home to Samuel and Eliza Fuqua, who lived on and worked this land throughout the 1800s, raising thirteen children to adulthood within its care.

A family grounded in faith and community, the Fuquas left a lasting mark not only on the property, but on the surrounding area. In 1859, they donated a portion of their land for what would become Oak Grove Baptist Church, a place of worship that still stands today. They now rest in the cemetery just beyond it, forever part of the land they helped shape.

In the years that followed, the property became home to Colonel G.W. Barbee, who was not only born here, but would go on to devote his life to its cultivation. A farmer, nurseryman, and respected member of the community, Barbee established what would become known in the late 1800s as Dew Drop Nursery and Fruit Farm.

His orchards were among the most admired in the region, producing a remarkable variety of fruits – most notably peaches that ripened in succession for nearly half the year. His dedication to quality and stewardship of the land made his farm not only productive, but widely respected throughout the South. A man of faith himself, Barbee continued the spiritual legacy of the land, living a life marked by purpose, integrity, and service to his community.

The land has always been part of something larger. Set near the banks of the Red River, this region carries a deep and storied past. Just miles away, along these same waters, a defining moment in American history unfolded when Andrew Jackson faced Charles Dickinson in a duel in 1808 – an event that would become part of the legend surrounding the future president.

In the decades that followed, the surrounding countryside became known for its ties to another chapter of American lore. Just across the Kentucky line, the nearby Hite House in Adairville is said to have served as a refuge for Jesse James and his gang, weaving a thread of intrigue into the fabric of this region’s history. Through every era, this land has remained a place of growth, gathering, and beauty.

In more recent years, the property continued its legacy of hospitality under the care of Simon Mayfield “Dick” Dickerson, a man whose life was marked by connection, community, and an extraordinary network of relationships. A lifelong educator and host, he welcomed guests to the property for gatherings and events, including fundraisers attended by his second cousin, Al Gore, further adding to the rich and evolving story of the estate.

In time, the farm entered a new chapter defined not only by preservation, but by restoration and love. Under the care of devoted stewards, the land was thoughtfully revived, as if it had been waiting to be brought back to life.
